CANADIAN ACCREDITED INSURANCE BROKER (CAIB) PROGRAM

PAGE MAP / QUICK LINKS

INTRODUCTION

The Canadian Accredited Insurance Broker (CAIB) program is a national, professional designation program that's provided by the Insurance Brokers Association of Canada (IBAC). If you’re employed by an IBABC-member brokerage, completion of all four CAIB courses will earn you a CAIB designation.

Successful completion of the CAIB 1 course (or the Fundamentals of Insurance course) AND the Council Rules Course will qualify you for a Level 1 General Insurance Salesperson's License in British Columbia. This includes the ability to sell ICBC’s Autoplan.

The CAIB courses/exams can be done in any order, but we recommend you start with CAIB 1 and work your way up.

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CAIB 1 AND FUNDAMENTALS OF INSURANCE

If you have little or no experience in the insurance industry, you should register in the Fundamentals of Insurance course because it’s for beginners.

If you already have some experience in the insurance industry, you should register in the CAIB 1 course because it’s more advanced. It also counts toward a CAIB designation, which Fundamentals does not.

Click here for a point-by-point comparison of CAIB 1 and Fundamentals of Insurance.

THE CAIB TEXTBOOKS

You should study from the current version of a CAIB textbook. The current editions of the CAIB textbooks are shown in the following table:

CAIB Textbook Current Edition
CAIB 1 2011
CAIB 2 2010
CAIB 3 2013
CAIB 4

2012

Warning! If anyone tells you that
you can easily pass a CAIB exam by memorizing their study notes, ignore them. The exams test for proper understanding of concepts, not just memorization. Be sure to study from a CAIB textbook.

The fee for each CAIB textbook is $295 for IBABC members and $395 for non-members, including GST.

Warning! You may only pay an IBABC-member price if you’re currently employed by a brokerage that’s a member in good standing of IBABC.

To order a CAIB textbook…

  • Download and complete the CAIB Registration Form. Send it to us by regular mail, courier, or as an email attachment (scanned PDF). Our contact information is shown on the form.

OR

  • Visit our office during business hours (Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.) to buy a textbook in person. We accept major credit cards (Visa, MasterCard and American Express), brokerage cheques, certified cheques and money orders.

Otherwise your textbook will be sent to your brokerage.

Study Option 4 – Online CAIB Classes

If you’re unable to attend a week-long CAIB Immersion course in downtown Vancouver, our Online CAIB Classes are an excellent alternative.

In partnership with Ensure Training and Education Ltd., IBABC is now offering the following online evening classes for CAIB:

CAIB Year Registration Deadline Course Dates Course Times
3 2019 September 9 September 25 - November 27 Wednesdays, 6:00 - 8:30PM
2 2020 January 3 January 15 - March 11 Wednesdays, 6:00 - 8:30PM
4 2020 April 1 April 15 - June 17 Wednesdays, 6:00 - 8:30PM

Please Note: Online classes for CAIB 1 are not available. Each online CAIB class requires at least 7 students registered to proceed.

These online classes are designed to maximize student success by appealing to various learning styles, and they include the following components:

  • Weekly live classes in a virtual classroom with a facilitator and other students. This environment promotes active listening so that you focus on the facilitator and in-class activities to better understand key concepts.
  • In-class polls and quizzes to help the facilitator assess how well concepts are being grasped without singling out individual students. The polls show the facilitator the concepts that must be further elaborated on, and learning is improved in that moment.
  • Study notes for you to print and use during class for following along, completing activities, and writing your own notes.
  • Flashcards are provided in a student portal for every chapter. Studies show that flashcards are one of the best tools for memorizing facts and concepts.
  • All classes are recorded and posted in the student portal in case you miss a class. The recordings are also excellent study and review tools.
  • Online practice quizzes, mid-term exams, and final practice exams so you can check your understanding of concepts and better prepare for the final exam. [Please Note: These practice quizzes and exams are only used to measure your learning and concept mastery; they do not take the place of the final exam.]

These courses come with a success guarantee – if you don’t pass your CAIB exam after completing the course, you’re welcome to take the course again at no charge. You must have written the exam within one (1) month of completing the course, however, and you must pay the exam re-write fee.

The fee for the Online CAIB Classes is $879 for IBABC members and $979 for non-members, including GST.

Warning! You may only pay an IBABC-member price if you’re currently employed by a brokerage that’s a member in good standing of IBABC.

For the fee you get:

  • The online classes
  • The textbook (mailed to you before the course starts)
  • Student-portal access to all learning tools.

If you already have a current version of the textbook, we’ll deduct the textbook fee ($295 for members, $395 for non-members) from your online-classes fee.

Your final exam is NOT included in these fees; the exam must be registered and paid for separately.

To register for an online CAIB class, download and complete the CAIB Registration Form.

A minimum grade of 60% is required to pass a CAIB exam.

Warning! CAIB exams written after and within one (1) year of a first-time exam are “rewrites”. All others are treated as “first-time” exams and are priced accordingly.

Council may sanction you up to and including suspension or cancellation of your insurance licence.

AFTER A CAIB EXAM

Getting Your CAIB Exam Mark

All exams with marks between 55% and 59% are automatically remarked, free of charge, to ensure the accuracy of the result. This re-marking is done before marks are provided.

CAIB Exam Marks

Your mark will be emailed directly to you about ten (10) business days after you write the online exam.

Warning! Do NOT phone us to get your exam mark. Due to high call volumes, exam marks are NOT given out over the phone.

Warning! After you’ve written a CAIB exam, your mark is all that will be provided to you. You will NOT be given access to your marked exam or an opportunity to discuss your exam answers with anyone.

Rewriting a CAIB Exam

If you don’t pass a CAIB exam, you’re welcome to rewrite it.

Each time you rewrite a CAIB exam you must pay a fee of $195.

Warning! CAIB exam rewrites are subject to waiting periods, which depend on the number of times you've previously written the exam:

For your second attempt, you may rewrite immediately (i.e., no waiting period).

For your third attempt, you must wait at least one (1) month after your second attempt.

For your fourth attempt and all other attempts after that, you must wait at least six (6) months after your last attempt.

Waiting periods are NOT wiped clean at the end of a calendar year. If you fail a third attempt on November 15th, for example, you still have to wait until May 15th (six months) to write a fourth time.

The waiting periods are not penalties. They ensure that your knowledge at the time of testing is accurately measured.

Challenging a CAIB-exam Mark

All CAIB exams with marks between 55% and 59% are automatically remarked, free of charge, to ensure the accuracy of the results. This re-marking is done before marks are provided.

If you believe your exam mark is inaccurate, you can challenge the result by having your exam re-marked. To have your exam re-marked you must submit your request within five (5) business days after your mark is provided to you.

Warning! After you’ve written a CAIB exam or had your exam re-marked, your mark is all that will be provided to you. You will NOT be given a copy of your marked exam or an opportunity to discuss your exam answers with anyone.
