National Day for Truth and Reconciliation Resources

In 2021, the federal government introduced and passed legislation designating Sept. 30 as the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, a statutory holiday to ensure the tragic history of residential schools is never forgotten. On March 9, 2023, the Province of British Columbia passed legislation to make Sept. 30 a statutory holiday.

IBABC will close for the statutory holiday to encourage staff to pause, reflect and educate themselves on the history of residential schools. The association encourages member brokers to consider the significance of the day and find meaningful ways to engage with staff and customers.

Below are some educational resources and local event listings to help you find ways in which you can engage and participate in the day.

RESOURCES

  • National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation
The NCTR is a place of learning and dialogue where the truths of the residential school experience will be honoured and kept safe for future generations.
  • Orange Shirt Society
September 30 is Orange Shirt Day, a grassroots campaign founded by Phyllis Webstad. Orange Shirt Day grew out of her own experiences and the experiences of other residential school survivors who attended St. Joseph’s Mission near Williams Lake. It's a day to honour the healing journeys of residential school survivors and their families and a time to engage in meaningful discussions about the history and legacy of the residential school system.
  • Witness Blanket
The Canadian Museum for Human Rights, in partnership with TELUS, launched a website fo the Witness Blanket, a monument that recognizes the atrocities of Canada's Indian school system. Assembled by Indegenous artist Carey Newman/Hayalthkin'geme, the Witness Blanket is a large-scale work of art composed of reclaimed items from residential schools and inspired by a woven blanket. On the website you can explore stories and objects from the Blanket that bear witness to the truth of residential schools.
